Recently Walt Disney Co. and Netflix announced plans to bring four original live action series to the online TV network. Staring four of Marvel’s popular characters, the series include big names like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage in the vicious world of Hell’s Kitchen, New York.
Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC, this ambitious project, loosely acknowledged as the “Marvel Defenders project“, is raking up the bills. Ah, but are we going to put a cost on the sheer awesomeness that these series are said to be? Sadly, yes. And it is a very large cost at that.
According to Variety, the sixty episodes will cost roughly $200 million, spent over three years. Yet if broken down, the budget will be spread between the five series equally (3.3 million budget each), so the total doesn’t even come close to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s budget of $14 million for just the pilot.
Furthermore, this is the biggest commitment from a TV project in the history of New York. The live-action episodes will be shot in NYC to provide true authenticity. The project does not have set dates yet but it is said that production will begin within the next three years. So far, 2015 sounds like a big year in the miniseries world.
