Every Monday on G&C I’ll be previewing the new comics I’m most looking forward to in the coming week. These are the comics that I expect will be fun, exciting, and worth your monies. If you think I’ve missed anything, leave a note in the comment section and let me know what you’re eagerly anticipating. Here’s my top three, and then a short list of other books to be aware of.

New Comics for April 9, 2014:

Take the wild west, stuff it full of sci-fi characters and future-tech, add one part romance and one part crazy psychotic death-cult. That, in a nutshell, is “East of West.” This is one of my favorite ongoing titles in comics. Jonathan Hickman is a master plotter, and I guarantee he’s got every step of this awesome, unpredictable story planned out in his mind. Dragotta’s pencils are some of the finest this side of the Mississippi. And the story … epic, just epic. What’s not to love?

“Lumberjanes” #1: Written by Grace Ellis and Noelle Stevenson. Art by Brooke Allen. Published by BOOM! Price: $3.99.

“Lumberjanes” is the second story to be  published by the BOOM! Box imprint, the first being “The Midas Flesh.” The goal of this imprint and these stories is to be as fun, creative and unique as possible. Basically, it’s people who love comics making great comics. This series is about five female friends at summer camp who spend their time kicking monster butt. There will be humor, and friendship, and werewolves and vampires and mysteries. Here’s hoping it lives up to my lofty expectations.

“Samurai Jack” #7: Written by Jim Zub. Art by Brittney Williams. Published by IDW. Price: $3.99.

I grew up with the original “Samurai Jack” cartoon series, so believe me when I say that this comic book is as an amazing and worthwhile continuation of Jack’s story and legacy. IDW has been killing it with their Cartoon Network properties recently, but “Samurai Jack” might be my favorite of them all. Why do I think this particular issue will be great? Look at the cover. This is a story about female versions of Jack and the Scotsman (Jacqueline and the Scotswoman!) and also something about leprechauns. Just go buy it, it’s going to be awesome.

Cool Books That You Really Should Know About: “The Walking Dead” #125, “Invincible” 110, “Nightcrawler” #1, “All-New Doop” #1, “AlL-New Ultimates” #1, “Batman Eternal” #1, “Power Puff Girls” #8, and “Unity” #6.

So many #1’s! Remember, I can’t 100 percent guarantee you’ll love these books, but I think the’re going to be pretty good. Check back in on Wednesday and Thursday to see some reviews of this week’s comics, and let us know in the comments section if there are any comics that you’d like to see reviewed. Enjoy new comics day!
