The Software of the Nintendo Conference

Posted: June 5, 2012 by Jon Erik Christianson in Gamenomics - Video Games, Nintendo

If you like Mario’s side-scrolling adventures or games that have been out for a year, then you would have loved Nintendo’s E3 press conference.

If you like Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Starfox, or actual announcements, then maybe not.

It’s software that sells hardware (like the Wii U or 3DS) and there was a surprisingly tepid software list. In fact, here’s what the showed us:

  • Pikmin 3 (technically new announcement, but has been long expected for a loooong time)
  • New Super Mario Brothers Wii U (new announcement)
  • New Super Mario Brothers 2 for 3DS (already announced, and same exact game franchise spin-off as above)
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star (announced last year and trailer didn’t show anything new)
  • Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (announced last year and trailer showed some new)
  • Batman: Arkham City – Armored Edition (no actual new content revealed, year old game)
  • Several other games that have been out for a year
  • NintendoWorld (aka, Wii U Sports)
  • Wii Fit U and Sing (fitness and karaoke)

In short, 4 Mario games, 3 of which had already been announced, 1 Pikmin game, and several games that have already existed on the market. Oh, and karaoke.

I’m excited for Pikmin 3. I don’t really care for Mario sidescroller platformers, so that rules out 2 more games. And I already knew about Luigi and Paper Mario for 3DS, so that isn’t new excitement.

I think being a knowledge-seeking Nintendo fan worked against me. I knew a lot of this stuff long before it was announced. That’s what I get for spoiling myself.

Nertz.

“A new way to play.”

As a Nintendo fan, I was quite shocked to see the Wii U shown off at today’s E3 Microsoft press conference. Oh wait, the tablet you connect to your console to alter your gaming experience wasn’t the Wii U? It was Microsoft’s Xbox SmartGlass? Oh, well, excuse me.

Before I launch into what might be a full-scale rant, I do want to clarify my background. I am, ultimately, a Nintendo fan. I’ve been very disgruntled with their treatment of their fans over the past few years, but that doesn’t change the fact that my hood is somewhere between Pallet Town and Yoshi’s Island.

I have some background in non-Nintendo gaming, including with the Xbox 360. And truth be told, I don’t inherently dislike other publishers because I’m a Nintendo fan. In fact, over the past few years I’ve become really jealous over the gaming experiences Microsoft and Sony have given their fans.

That being said, I was kinda perturbed when I realized how similar SmartGlass was to the Wii U, especially considering they will likely be released around the same time. Follow me after the break.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2012 starts tomorrow in Los Angeles, California.  Are you as stoked as I am?!  The E3 Expo is the best time to find out about the year’s greatest upcoming games.  Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and more all have set times where they reveal their big plans.  All of the coverage will be covered on the G4 television channel, but much of the expo is streamed online.  Here is the schedule for this year’s E3 Expo:
