If you could not make it to New York Comic Con last month, you missed out on two great comic art shows: the 2nd Annual NYCC Charity Art Auction to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and DC Entertainment’s “Darkness & Light” exhibition and education tour to benefit relief efforts in the Horn of Africa.  However, if you’re in the New England area you may be inclined to visit the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA.  Showing now until February 24 is famed comic illustrator and painter Alex Ross’ exhibit, “Heroes & Villains.” (more…)

I’m sure many of you saw the recent pilot episode of Arrow.  Here is a breakdown of what I thought.

Django Unchained is the newest movie from acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino, arriving in theaters Christmas day. It’s a western set in the deep south before the civil war, starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson, among others. Apparently the movie will now be receiving the comic book treatment, with “Django Unchained” #1 set to launch on December 5th, the first of a five part series. Said Tarantino: “The comic will literally be that very first draft of the script. All that material that didn’t make the movie, all of that will be part of the piece. And I’m really excited about it.” Art for the series will be done by R.M. Guera, and the books will be published by DC comics.  Here’s the trailer for the movie; click below to see the first and third covers of the series by Jim Lee and Massimo Carnavale, respectively.

The cover of Green Lantern #0 from DC Comics

As part of DC Comics’ much-publicized “Zero Month,” the publisher has recently released Green Lantern #0.  The comic’s scribe, Geoff Johns, has been interviewed in numerous news outlets because this “zero issue” happens to introduce readers to an all new Green Lantern: an Arab-American from Dearborn, Michigan named Simon Baz.  Thus far, Baz looks to be a worthy addition to the DC Universe.

Shown at the San Diego Comic-Con, 2013’s Man of Steel trailers are now available for your viewing pleasure! Both trailers show the same thing, but the first is voiced by Kevin Costner (who plays Jonathan Kent) and the second is voiced by Russell Crowe (who plays Superman’s biological father, Jor-El). Based on both previews, it seems that this Superman film will focus heavily on who Clark is as an individual, as Costner says, “One day you’re gonna have to make a choice. You have to decide what kind of man you want to grow up to be. Who that man is, good character of bad, he is going to change the world.”

I’m looking forward to this new direction that director Zack Snyder is taking to the Superman film franchise. Making a movie about a super hero who can do anything is no easy task; it doesn’t leave room for many surprises. Focusing on what Superman stands for, rather than what he can do, will be a nice change of pace, and I truly hope that Snyder can deliver the experience that all fans of the man of steel have been dying for.

“When there’s trouble you know who to call…Teen Titans!” That was until 2006, when the popular kids television show was canceled.

But wait! The Titans returned in chibi form several months ago! They only existed as a small part of the DC Nation shorts, but fans were encouraged by this sudden revival that included all of the original voice actors. Maybe they’d revive the entire series?!

Well, turns out that is actually going to happen.

In 2013, new TV show Teen Titans Go! will debut as a part of the DC Nation block with all of the original voice actors.

Official Logo of DC Comics

A the start of the blog, I posted about What is the ‘DC New 52’?.  A Third Wave of DC New 52 comics was just announced, so I thought it would be good to give an overall listing of each Wave of comics, as well as all of the DC series that are being cut.  To reiterate, DC will be keeping its comic reboot to 52 individual series.  DC is cancelling and replacing the series that are not selling well, which is why the new replacements are coming in ‘waves’.

Batman Annual #1 Review and Other Thoughts

Posted: June 2, 2012 by Jon Erik Christianson in Comicology - Comic Books, DC Comics

Beware, this review of Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Jason Fabok’s Batman Annual #1 review will feature spoilers. Proceed with caution.

The Batman series this year has been a winding, haunting thrill ride of an experience thanks to fine work produced by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, and the rest of the Batman crew. Batman may have the best rogues gallery in all of superhero-dom, but the Court of Owls has managed to shoehorn its way in with the greats.

That being said, people may be curious to see what’s going on with Batman’s classic villains and their origins since the New 52 reboot. Penguin got his own (fairly stellar) mini-series complete with an origin story, Poison Ivy is out painting the town red (or green) with the Birds of Prey, Two-Face has been getting his story told in the back-ups of Detective Comics, and Harley Quinn similarly got her origin story re-told (don’t talk to me about it) in Suicide Squad. Oh, and the Joker got a face-lift.

But what about Mr. Freeze? Well, Batman Annual #1 takes a moment aside from the chaotic owl action to  re-introduce the dude with a cold shoulder.

Unfortunately, this still well-written story’s modification of Mr. Freeze’s origin story renders my icy hot passion for the character tepid. Click on after the break for the rest of my review.
